Russia calls on G8 and world to pool efforts for urgent goals: Medvedev

June 30 - Russia appeals to the other G8 countries and to the entire world to pool efforts in tackling urgent issues, Dmitry Medvedev, first deputy prime minister, said at the conference with the European Union countries' ambassadors, Friday.

He talked about the fundamental goals of the G8 summit, soon to start in St. Petersburg.

"Russia urges the G8 and the whole world to join efforts on a number of problems to be resolved." These are, principally, "reliable supplies of traditional fuels to the world economy; secure and diversified energy supply; progress of the nuclear power industry, and of energy-saving technologies; and R&D for technical breakthroughs and for environmentally clean energy sources," said the Russian deputy prime minister.

He informed the ambassadors about the national projects Russia is implementing. "Russia and European Union countries are focusing on the development and improvement of education, health services, and other socially essential spheres.

"Russia's economic potential is increasing, and it can now afford substantial additional investment to implement major national projects related to those goals," he said.
