Mironov urges U.S. to create common legal framework to counter terrorism

September 12   Russia's Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov has called on the United States to create a common legal framework in the struggle against terrorism.

"We fought together against Nazism during World War II, and today we are fighting together against terrorism within the anti-terrorist coalition. I think it is time to set up a common legal framework in the fight against terrorism, and we are ready to cooperate with the U.S. Congress," said Mironov.

He had arrived to attend the unveiling of a "Tear of Grief" monument donated by Russia to the American people.

According to the speaker, Russia and the U.S. have more common interests and similarities than differences.

Talking to journalists after the ceremony, Mironov spoke with confidence about the progress in cooperation between Moscow and Washington in the struggle against terrorism after the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg.

"But while we must respect the international law, we should not forget about national interests," Mironov said.

In his view, Russia's pragmatism in foreign policy is meeting with ever greater understanding in the West.
