Gryzlov: Duma to Ratify Convention Against Nuclear Terrorism on Friday

September 14

On Friday, September 15th, the State Duma intends to ratify the Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, Speaker of the Duma Boris Gryzlov announced at a news conference. He described the upcoming ratification as extremely important, especially in the context of the forthcoming summit of the G8 parliamentary speakers in St. Petersburg, which also begins on Friday. Gryzlov said the summit would concentrate on the struggle against global challenges and threats.

“I will report to my colleagues that we have ratified the convention,” said Gryzlov, and expressed the hope that other G8 countries will also join it.

The UN General Assembly adopted the Russian-initiated International Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism in April 2005. Russian President Vladimir Putin and a number of other leaders signed the document in September of the same year. The convention creates additional possibilities for anti-terrorist cooperation under the UN aegis.
