Gryzlov calls G8 parliamentary meeting a true “summit of confidence”

September 16

The fifth meeting of G8 parliamentary leaders deserved to be called a "summit of confidence," Russian State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov told reporters after the meeting.

Having considered two key topics - legislative support for global energy security and the fight against terror - the Russian official said that the meeting had concluded that rich nations should promote developing countries' access to energy resources and that nations should cooperate in the development of alternative energy sources.

The discussion "took all the time we had" and was held in an atmosphere of openness, Gryzlov said. He highlighted specific decisions made on all points of debate and promised that they would translate into reality in the near term. The participants agreed to share their legal acts on terror and illegal immigration.

"We will start doing that tomorrow, taking the first step toward harmonizing the laws of all G8 countries in those fields," Gryzlov said.

The parliamentary leaders accepted the German Bundestag speaker's invitation to a similar meeting in the fall of 2007 in Berlin.
