G8 parliamentary leaders agree to share laws on terror, migration

September 16

The G8 parliamentary leaders agreed to share their national laws on terror and illegal migration, Russian State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov told reporters after today's meeting in St. Petersburg.

"There was unanimous support for starting to do that tomorrow, taking the first step toward harmonizing our laws to make our fight against terror more effective," Gryzlov said.

The parliamentary leaders agreed to set up an advisory council consisting of members of relevant committees of G8 parliaments, as well as renowned academics and public figures, to investigate key issues of global energy security. Gryzlov described that as an important step toward technology sharing.

The energy security debate, he said, involved expert reports concerning global consumption. The conclusion was that richer nations should help poorer ones develop their technology and gain access to energy.

The Russian official described energy efficiency, energy saving and alternative energy sources as issues of key importance as well.

"We need to share technologies and make them closer to one another," he said.
