Putin describes G8 parliamentary leaders’ meetings as relevant

September 17.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described G8 parliamentary leaders' meetings as relevant as he met with the G8 parliamentary leaders in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

"The G8 parliamentary leaders' forum has not been held for a long time but it is important enough because sometimes it is absolutely impossible to translate into action what has been proposed by G8 leaders without appropriate decisions at the legislative level," he said.

He highlighted parliaments' role in "adopting legal acts regulating national and international relations" and said budget appropriations "that must reflect our common vision of how to build the global world today and what is included in the G8's responsibility in solving these global problems" could not be ensured without cooperation with parliaments.

G8 parliaments need to play an important part in the legislative support and secure political and social endorsement for G8 initiatives, the Russian president said, expressing his hope that G8 parliamentarians would take proactive positions on relevant issues.
