Russia appeals to the other G8 countries and to the entire world to pool efforts in tackling urgent issues, Dmitry Medvedev, first deputy prime minister, said at the conference with the European Union countries’ ambassadors, Friday. J8 to start in St. Petersburg July 8

The Junior8—G8 forum for young people—is opening in St. Petersburg, July 8, the Russian G8 Presidency organizing committee announced. To gather eight national teams, the J8 has its venue in Pushkin, or Tsarskoye Selo, near St. Petersburg. Its official opening is scheduled for July 10.

Today, the old mansion of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Spiridonovka Street became the focus of international attention. It played host to the foreign ministers from Britain, Germany, Canada, Italy, Russia, the U.S., France, and Japan, as well as to EU High Commissioner for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Xavier Solana and EU Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner. China expects the upcoming G8 summit in St. Petersburg to “develop a new energy security concept.” China’s President Hu Jintao will attend the July session, Jiang Yu, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said to a news briefing today. If developed, the concept “will promote cooperation in that sphere,” the diplomat said.

In this context we discussed the situation around the nuclear program of Iran and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. The Iranian nuclear problem will be a priority for G8 foreign ministers, who are meeting in Moscow on June 29, said European Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Benita Ferrero-Waldner. Pandemics are rare but can have devastating consequences for public health all over the world. SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) resulted in severe economic losses, estimated as high as thirty billion US dollars. The social and economic consequences of an influenza pandemic would likely be significantly higher.
